Endless COVID!

This is an unprecedented and scary time in the world. Cases of Covid and deaths continue to rise in Manitoba.

Things improved in the summer and I was able to open my studio and do some wonderful portraits, but now that can’t happen. Our case numbers in Manitoba are too high and the cost would be too great if my clients or I became ill. I’m happy that I was able to do some fall sessions outside, but the weather isn’t cooperating to do that now in November.
So things are slow.
I miss photographing newborns. I haven’t felt that it was safe to do newborn pictures at any time since the spring.  I have newborn outfits that I haven’t used and new Christmas backdrops that I can’t use. I know that many businesses are suffering and it is best to close shop. It is better to be safe.

If you are looking for a Christmas gift for someone on your list, why not consider a gift certificate for photography? And to help you with that, I am offering a gift certificate sale.

For a limited time all gift certificates will be 20% off. That means if you buy someone a $300 gift certificate, it would cost $240; a savings of $60. For the $240 that you would pay, the recipient would receive the session plus $220 worth of products, such as 4 8x10s or a couple of 16x20s.

The gift certificate would be valid for all of 2021.

It’s an easy gift option for you and you wouldn’t need to leave your home to purchase it. I could email the gift certificate to you or print it and put it into the mail for you.

Don’t delay. This offer is good until Dec. 10th. Get your Christmas shopping done now and support a local business.

Photo Restoration

Another great Christmas gift idea is to have some old faded photographs restored.  Here are some examples of pictures that I’ve restored.

It’s amazing how much information can be restored in old photographs!

Estimates for photo restoration are based on how much time it would take me to restore your photo and would depend on how much damage there is in the original print.

This is another gift that you would not need to leave your house to purchase. The original could be mailed to me or you could send me a digital copy by email. I would mail the restored print back to you. It would be a very safe and simple procedure.

Why I am obsessed with my iPhone and you could be too!

I confess that I am addicted to my iPhone.  I like to have it with me at all times. Leaving it at home (which I have done on occasion),  makes me feel as though I am missing a body part! I sleep with it, eat with it and use it all day long!
It really amazes me that this little device is so powerful and so useful. This small phone/camera/GPS, etc. does just about everything but paint your house and cook your meals (although you can use it to find a painter or a cook!). I play Scrabble on my iPhone, (having logged in well over 1000 games}. I use the GPS and am always using it to find information. (Do you know how flea markets got their names? Use your Smart phone to find out)
I take a lot of photos on my iPhone and use some very cool apps to develop them.
This photo was shot and developed on my iPhone. You can see the actual print at the Red River Exhibition Photo Salon!

I combined these 2 images to create the one above.

Amazing isn’t it?
All on my iPhone!
The world at my fingertips. And if fits in the palm on my hand!
This is one addiction that I love!

Here are some photo tips to improve your iPhone photography:

  • Use a camera app called Camera+ instead of the camera that comes with your iPhone. With Camera+, it won’t take the picture until you hold the camera still.
  • My favorite apps for developing photos are Snapseed, DynamicLight and DistressedFX. Play with your photos. It’s the only way your photography will improve.
  • Take an iPhone photography course given by Alexandra Morrison. I don’t know when she’s doing another course, but I’ve learned a lot from her.

Let me know if you have any questions re:iPhone Photography.

Questions to ask your family photographer

There are many options out there for choosing a family photographer. On Groupon alone, you can pick from  9 different businesses. The prices for Groupon photographers vary from $29 to $69 and the deals include receiving a few prints, to receiving a DVD of up to 20 high resolution digital images. I like a deal as much as the next person, but I wonder about businesses can offer a deal that is costing them money. If you are spending the time to get your family together to get professionals photos taken, don’t you want a great product?

Here are some suggestions for what to ask and what to look for when considering hiring a photographer:

  • Take a look at the image that they are using to advertise their deal. (People should not have green faces and their faces should not be hidden in shadow ) Look at their website and see if you like what they have to offer.
  • Ask how long they have been in business. (I’ve been in business for 8 years.)
  • What kind of photography do they specialize in? Do they have experience in that area? For example, if they are photographing children, have they had experience with them? (I was an early years teacher for over 30 years.)
  • Is there a policy for rescheduling in case of inclement weather? (I will reschedule an appointment with up to an hour’s notice if the weather is bad.)
  • Are digital images available for purchase? (I offer high resolution digital images).
  • Do you know anyone else who has used this person? Word of mouth is huge in finding a great photographer.)

I know it’s a lot of work to get your family ready for a photo session. You don’t want it to be a waste of your time.
Let me know if you are interested in purchasing my Groupon. I will do the session for the Groupon price of $55.

Please note that Groupons cannot be used for newborn sessions as those sessions take up to 4 hours to photograph.

Here’s my current deal:

Here’s a past deal:

Summer is here. Email me at to book your session. Do it now!

Landscape Photography Tips: Victoria Beach!

We  have the most beautiful lakes and beaches in Manitoba and I was lucky to have spent a recent weekend at Victoria Beach. I had been there before but never for more than an afternoon. I love the rocks and the beaches but was especially struck by the gnarly trees in one spot and the high cliffs with faraway views. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Tips for taking better landscape photos:

  • Watch the light. If you can, take your pictures either right after sunrise, or before sunset.
  • Look at other photographer’s work online.
  • Learn the rules of composition; like rule of thirds framing
  • Most importantly, take a photography course or join a community of photographers. There are a lot of them in Winnipeg but I would suggest the, as that’s the one that I belong to and I’ve learned a lot from them!
  • Then practice, practice, practice. Take a ton of photographs
  • Have fun doing it!

But is it summer?

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost the end of June; that the longest day of the year is here.  Our summer days have been few and far between. I don’t think I’ve ever had to reschedule as many sessions as I have in the last month. And it just seems to be continuing that way.
I love shooting outside. I love natural backdrops but sometimes the weather does not cooperate. I will reschedule at an hour’s notice if need be. Sometimes rescheduling is not an option. I know what that’s like. You’ve finally got the whole family to agree to a day and time and you got them all to wear matching colours and then it starts to rain. Rescheduling would be difficult.
There are some options for indoor photos. We can use my studio but the space is limited to about 6 people. I often use the Legislative building. It’s free and doesn’t need to be booked ahead of time. There are many spots that make great backdrops for family photos. And then, if it is possible to go outside, the grounds are lovely! I have also done a few sessions inside at the Forks, both in the Inn at the Forks and inside the Forks Market. It’s a great alternative if it isn’t a busy weekend.

We can make it work. It isn’t the same as being outside, but we can make some beautiful photographs!

This was taken inside at The Ledge.

Taken inside The Inn at the Forks.

Summer Deal

My next website coupon deal is for 50% off prints, including the shipping fee. The coupon code is “summerdeal.” It is valid until July 7th, so don’t delay using it. Please note that this offer is good for prints bought from my website only.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I book about a month in advance, so let me know if you are interested in updating your family photo.

Remember “summerdeal.”  Use it now.

And Finally

I found this poem some time ago. I’ve never heard of Erin Hanson, the poet, but his words ring true. You can tell a lot about a person by the photos they have displayed. What photos are displayed at your house? Are they recent? Is it time to update them?

Lights, Camera…………………Prints?? (Winnipeg Photography Newsletter)

Lights, Camera, Prints

It’s ironic that we take more photos than ever before but make very few prints. Although It is wonderful that we document our lives this way and have images on our phones and computers, we need to be mindful of  what could happen to those images in the future.

Getting prints made is a guarantee that our images will last and is a good idea for a number of reasons:

  • Hard drive crashes: It is only a matter of time before your hard drive crashes.  It’s not a question of “will it crash?” but “when will it crash?’ If your precious memories of a trip to Disney-world or your child’s first birthday are stored on  your computer, it is only a matter of time before those images will be lost.
  • Technology changes; 100 years from now we might not be able to use DVDs. Remember VHS and floppy disks? Having your images backed up on DVDs is no guarantee that they will be safe.
  • Sharing Memories: There is something special in sharing a print with a friend or relative, with having prints on display and with passing them down to the next generation. Giving someone a DVD of images does not have the same sentimental value as giving them a photograph.

There are some good options for printing that make the whole task painless:

  1. Photo books: Photo books are easy to put together and relatively inexpensive. I recently saw a “little black book” done at Black’s Photography and it looked great! Other places for photo books are: Costco, My Publisher, Blurb and Shutterfly.
  2. Online Print Ordering: I order all of my prints online. I use Don’s Photo Pro Lab for professional prints and Costco for others. In one of my photography classes, we had prints made at 17 different labs in the city. There was a wide range in quality, with the Pro labs doing the best jobs and drug store kiosks and Walmart  the worst.  Costco does a reasonably good job. Don’s Photo, Lab Works and Photo Central have great products and guarantee the results. With prints, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

I can help you produce a photo book. Send me an email ( or phone me (204-962-3424) and we can discuss what your needs are. I’ll be happy to give you a quote for your photo book.

Print Coupon

I am offering a print coupon for prints ordered from my website only. The coupon code is “printdiscount.” and is valid from April 12th till the 30th. The coupon gives you 50% off prints and for the first time ever, it is including the shipping!

Don’t delay using this coupon. Prices will go back to normal in May!

Iphoneography is the art of creating images with your iPhone and one of Manitoba’s premier photographers is an expert at this art. Alexander Morrison was Canadian Photographic Artist of the year in 2009 and has won many Manitoba Photography Awards. Some of her award-winning images were shot and edited with her iPhone!

This is a perfect opportunity to get the most our of your iPhone Cameras. It’s a full day workshop for only $59.00.

Here’s the link for registration. Hope to see some of you there!

Snap and Burn Photographers

There are a lot of photographers out there doing what is called “snap and burn” photography. I wrote a blog post some time ago on this topic:

Snap and burn photography became popular after the advent of the digital camera. Everyone became a photographer and some now offer their services for one low price, which includes the session fee and the images on a DVD.

So why choose ChrisMcWilliamsPhotography when there are cheaper alternatives out there?

  • I know kids. I’ve spent most of my adult life teaching them or photographing them and I know how to communicate with them.
  • I know photography. I’ve taken a lot of classes and have kept up with the latest technology and techniques.
  • I make the experience easy. Sessions are fun and galleries are online for you to view in the comfort of your home. You have 2 weeks to place your order. No pressured ordering meeting. No minimum order.
  • I guarantee my product. It you are not happy with your session, we will do it again. No questions asked.

Here’s an example of the difference between an original image that would might get from a “snap and burn” photographer and a fully edited image.

Is it worth the difference? I think it is.

Spring is finally here and I know a lot of you will want to update your family photos. I want to remind you that I will honour the Groupon price of $55 per session for former Groupon clients or to anyone who subscribes to this newsletter. I book about a month ahead of time, so let me know if you are interested in booking a session in May. (Please note that this price is only good for groups of 6 or less).

Winter is Here!

Whining about winter!

I try to be a positive person but winter is not my season. I don’t like the dark, the cold, the isolation, the icy roads, the blustery winds and a host of other stuff. I walk outside in the winter and I don’t mind that. I dress for it. But I really hate driving in the winter and I really hate how early it gets dark. But anyone who wants to live  in Winnipeg has to put up with winter and so I do. I like living here and I plan to move. I’m thinking of going somewhere hot but not sure where.  Let’s see: Hawaii, Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica, ………………………………….

How about the rest of you? How do you cope with winter? I could use a pep talk on why I should like winter.

This is Kilcona Park. Yes, hoar-frost is beautiful and is one good reason to like winter.

I haven’t done a newsletter for a long time because I’ve been so busy shooting and editing and working on orders. It’s all good. Even in the winter! But I am taking a break from all the other things that I need to do to write to you about what is new here at ChrisMcWilliamsPhotography.

New Package

I like to try out new price categories and this one has been very popular lately.

10 digital images plus 5×7 prints of the images for $185

One of the reasons that I introduced this category is because of my belief that images should be printed and displayed. It’s great to have digital copies of your files but I feel it’s also important to display prints of your favourite images in your home and office and  I often wonder how many clients who buy digital files will have prints made.

The other reason is because, if I include the print, I know how it will look and can assured of its quality. I have my prints done at Don’s Photo on Main and I recommend them to clients. I urge you to avoid Walmart or drug store kiosks for printing. The quality is not good and will not reflect the work that I put into your images. I want you to have the best quality for a reasonable price.

Christmas cards

I’ve had some people ask if I design Christmas cards and the answer is that yes, I do. I can do a custom design for you or you can make up your own card on my website. Yes, you can design your card right on my website, using your images and make any changes to it that you would like. Just start by clicking on the “add to my cart” button on any image and follow the links.

And just in time for Christmas, I am offering a coupon code for 20% off all cards. This offer is good until Dec. 7th, so don’t delay! You’ll need to hurry on this offer as my website provider always states that shipping takes 3 weeks. I’ve had orders come in a week or 10 days but I guess they say 3 weeks to be on the safe side.

The code is “xmascardspecial.” Just type in the code when you place your order and you will save 20%!

This is a screen shot of one card that I made up in 5 minutes!

Thank you to all the people who bought my latest Groupon. Don’t forget that this one expires in 6 months and not a year. And please remember that if you bought a Groupon before and are interested in another session, that I will do your session for the Groupon price. Why give Groupon 45% of the money?

So for $55, I will do your session and include prints of one image!

Your Galleries

A huge “thank you”  to all my clients who have placed an order in a timely fashion.

I like to keep galleries listed for a 2 week period but I am open to keeping your gallery listed a little longer. I understand that sometimes your lives are more hectic than other times and you need more time. Having said that, I won’t keep your gallery listed indefinitely and will move it to the archives if I don’t hear from you. However, should you decide to place an order at a later date, just send me an email and I can relist it. But have no fear, I never delete your images. They are safely stored in the Smugmug Vault!

It was my pleasure to once be a WE DAY photographer. This year I followed Craig Kielburger, one of the founders around. I was at the gala event the evening before the main event and then followed him around the entire day of We Day. I thought that Craig was a quiet, possibly even introverted man, who is not at all like his stage persona. He was very considerate of everyone that he came in contact with and seemed to genuinely care about others. It was an honor to spend time with him.

Here are a few highlights of the 2 days, starting with me on stage!

And Finally

That’s it for today!

Fall Fotos?

I love summer but I have to admit that I’m enjoying the cooler nights and the beautiful sunny days. Let’s hope the weather stays like this for a while. Fall is always a busy time for family photos and this year is no exception. The leaves are starting to turn colours.  I think the peak time for fall family pictures with the brightest colours will be in about 2 weeks. I have some openings left if you are interested in booking a session in a fall park setting. The photos below were taken at Bunn’s Creek Park and Kilcona Park.

Don’t forget that if you bought a Groupon before, I will give you the Groupon price for your next session.  I will be featured on Groupon again in about a month but why have half of your $55 go to Groupon? Email me if you would like more information.

Wedding Photography

Someone once told me that Winnipeg has 20 times the number of wedding photographers per capita than Chicago. I can believe it! So how do you
pick the one that you want for your special day? It can be very confusing. I’ve written a couple of blog posts on choosing  a wedding photographer.
You can read them here:

There are many reasons for choosing ChrisMcWilliamsPhotography for your wedding photography, as stated in the blog posted listed above but there is one reason that I want to mention here and that is the quality of the second and sometimes even third shooters that I have working with me.

At recent wedding, I had 2 other photographers working with me. One of them caught the series of images shown below, showing me instructing the
couple on how to do the dip. Thank you Kristen Homeniuk. You can see the resulting images below the collage. What you will notice is that this
series shows 3 different perspectives of the same shot. It would be impossible for 1 person to capture those images. With 2 or 3 photographers at my
weddings, I can be almost certain to capture the magic moments, like the ring exchange, the first kiss and the father giving away his daughter.

How to do the dip!

Three views of 1 shot!

Thank you Kristen Homeniuk and Sylvia Jensen for these images!

Here are some comments from people whose weddings we’ve done:

I’m so happy that you were our photographer for this Once in a Lifetime experience Don and I shared yesturday.
OMG Chris, Incredible, outstanding…and thankyou so much……. Shelley

Don and I want to thank you so much, you were able to capture that sparkle, that magic, our love for each other shows through your lens, and you caught it forever… Shelley

Thank you so much for a great time!  I love the pics you’ve posted and it makes me even more excited to see the rest! Alexander

Thank you so much for your patience – sometime the adults are much worse than the kids – but these pics are fantastic!  Jessica

We just took a look at the blog and Oh my gosh, we LOVE all the pictures you put up!  We especially loved the one on the stairs, the one in the main area of the Leg and the one with all of us outside cheering!  Thanks so much, they are beautiful and we can’t wait to see the rest when we get back ! Holly

Thanks a million yesterday!!! We had such a great time with the 3 of you!  Shane

Wedding Photography Offer

My offer is simply this: Refer someone to me for their wedding photos and YOU will receive a free photo session plus a DVD of your 5 favorite images for free. That’s a value of $125 plus $105= $230, just for passing along my name.  It’s win/win deal. You get a free session, along with some images, the wedding couple gets an amazing photographer (moi) and I get another wedding booking.

Just ask the couple to email me at and we can set up a meeting!

And Finally

A page from a Roald Dahl book that I found online. Not sure which book it’s from but it’s so true.

Yours in photography and with many happy thoughts,
