Baby on the Way (Winnipeg Maternity Photographer)

I meet the nicest people in this job and today was no exception. This couple were just as wonderful as they look in their pictures. A and T were high school sweethearts who have been married for 4 years now. I can’t wait to photograph their baby once she/he is born.  This couple is sure to have a very beautiful child!

I’ve gotten a little behind in editing pictures. Please know that I am planning to work this week and get caught up. Last week turned out to be much busier than I had anticipated, including 3 nights at the Ex with the photo exhibit and the reception for the contest winners. It’s full speed ahead this week.

Granite Hills Clouds wins at Red River Exhibition (Winnipeg Photographers)

This is a picture taken at the Granite Hills Golf Course. I have shown this image before on this blog.

As you can see, the sky was truly amazing. It did rain a bit but the clouds were very threatening looking. Threatening clouds make for great pictures. So far, I’ve entered this image in the Manitoba Camera Club competitions twice; one in the Sept. Open and then in the end of the year April Open. It won a first and a second in those competitions. This year the Red River Ex is having an art exhibit as part of its show, including an exhibit by the Manitoba Camera Club. (www.manitobacameraclub.ca)  I entered this image in the photography competition at the Ex and won a second. Yeh clouds I say!!

This image and others will be part of a digital photography exhibit at the Red River Ex. Come out and see the images and meet some of the great people at the camera club. We’ll be in the new big building directly opposite the front entrance. Just go down the road to your left a short distance and you’ll see the new building. I’ll be one of the volunteers there. Hope to see you!!

Mother’s Day Special (Winnipeg Photographers)

The rain has been lovely for turning everything green and making  things grow, but it hasn’t been good for photography sessions outdoors. I have had to cancel a number of outdoor sessions. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the weather will improve this week.

Are you still stumped as to what to get your mother for Mother’s Day? If you are, I have a great idea. How about booking a photo session with your mother? I  think it is the best gift that you can give to your mother. Being a mother and grandmother myself, I know how much it means to me to have pictures of myself with my sons and my grandson.

Because I think it is so valuable to have those visual memories in years to come, I am offering a special for Mother’s Day. For this week only, you will be able to book a “short session” for $100 and also get a DVD of 10 digital images in a high resolution jpeg format. Short sessions include 2 poses and take from 20 minutes to half an hour. If you won’t have time for the session by Mother’s Day, I am offering gift certificates that you can use in the future.  The gift certificates also need to be purchased by Sunday.

Have a look at the 2 styles of mult-generational pictures in this poster.

These session can be outside or in my studio only. It does not include sessions at your house.

If  you are interested in booking a session give me a call at 962-3424  or send me an email at chrismcwilliamsphotography@gmail.com.

Hope to hear from you.

Photo Albums Boost Happiness (Winnipeg Photographers)

A recent editorial by Robert Alison in the Winnipeg Free Press talks about the things that have been found to boost happiness. We have all read articles such as this, but this article points to one that I have never read about; looking through a photo album. Here are some of the happiness boosters that Alison talks about and how much they have been found to boost happiness:

wine 14%

chocolate 8%

smiling 58%

thinking about a recent positive event 66%

Looking through a photo album 63%

I have no idea how a researcher would quantify these items or set up this kind of research, but it is interesting that even smiling will make us feel happier! It is also reassuring to me that wine and chocolate boost happiness. But the surprise is that someone included looking through a photo album in the study.

The research was done by Peter Naish at Open University.  Alison quotes him as finding that:

“Looking through photo albums elevates all measures — sense of relaxation, calmness, alertness and sense of being valued,” he says.

I often tell people to be sure to make prints of their digital images. Hard drives crash, and nobody really knows how long a DVD will last. So safety is one reason to make prints. Now we see that looking at them in years to come will boost our happiness.

I see 2 issues here.  Are you preserving those precious memories from when your children are little by having pictures taken and are you getting prints made.

My First Year Club includes a free 8.5 x 11 photo book at the end of the first year. There will never be a year in your child’s life in which your child changes so much. Imagine the high you will get 30 years later when your child is grown up and you look through this book.

I offer digital images from all of my sessions. Please be sure to get prints made from this DVD. Prints last and are so easy and fun to share, besides being wonderful to look back on.

So keep smiling and get those pictures taken of your child. You will never regret that kind of investment!

Things are looking kind of green (Winnipeg Child Photographer)

No it isn’t green out yet, but it was pretty green in my studio today with these 2 sweethearts. I had a ton of  fun playing with the 2 of them. I think their favorite thing were my 2 teacher bells.  I was noisy but good fun. I loved watching them dance around and ring them fast and then ring slowly. That was their teacher mom’s idea. Thank you for bringing these two great kids today!

I’ve been experimenting with adding some texture and colour in the backgrounds of pictures. I am curious as to what you think of it. Let me know.

Just Me and My Brother (Winnipeg Newborn Photographer)

This morning I had the pleasure of photographing another newborn and his 2.5 year old brother.  I had photographed this family before and really enjoyed working with them once again. Here is a preview of a few of your pictures:

This beautiful little guy slept for me but since he has a cold he kept waking himself up!

That’s Mercer Mayer for those who aren’t familiar with children’s books. He has just about every Just me and …..

This is the second time I have had the pleasure of photographing these two sisters. The baby is 4 months now and K, the older girl is almost 2. I love a photography challenge and K is a challenge. I do all of my tricks and K does not crack a smile. I do barn yard animals, I make faces, I use noise makers and ring bells, K does not crack a smile. So when I get a good image of K, it’s like I have a jackpot of riches. I don’t think smiles make the best portraits and I always get some images of K that I love and this time was no exception. She is gorgeous, with her big brown eyes so if I can engage her, the results are stunning! Look at this beautiful little girl!

Her sister is just a real cutie pie and easy as pie to photograph. She makes my job easy!

And The Winners Are (Winnipeg Landscape Photographer)

A week ago I shared my entries into the January Open for the Manitoba Camera Club. The winners have been announce, so I am ready to share with you how I did. Thank you to everyone who told me their favorites.

Honorable Mention went to the graveyard shot. This was in the colour print category. I actually took this picture over a year ago, but it stayed with me and I kept going back to look at it. I worked on it, importing the lens flare from another image and changing the colour and contrast. I also made the sky pink, which one person told me he didn’t care for. I thought it made for a nice backdrop to the bluish grey crosses.

Graveyard

Third Place in the black and white category went to this print of a little girl running at The Forks. I had done a shoot of this family that day. After I was done with the posed pictures, I asked the kids to go and play and said I would keep shooting. That was when I got this amazing shot as well as some others of her and her brother. It just goes to show you that the best images are not the posed ones.

Airborne

I got a second for this black and white church in Morley, Alberta. My daughter in law had taken me to this church a few years ago to take pictures of it. I got some great shots at that time, but I wanted to go back again. Morley is about 40 minutes from Calgary. So the last time I went to Calgary I decided to go back  to the church. I drove around in circles for quite a while before I found it. If you like photography, this is one place worth driving to.

Leading the way...

And I got a first for this image in the projected category. I took this at Delta Marsh at a workshop in May. It was freezing cold out when we lined our cameras up at the shoreline at sunset. The logs were actually facing the other way, but I did a horizontal flip with them in Photoshop so that the lines of the logs would lead to the sun.

Sunset at Delta Marsh

And that was it. I place in 4 images out of 6 entries, which I was very happy about. Next theme is environmental portraits and I plan a few trips to the north end to see what I can find.

A Dream Baby (Winnipeg Newborn Photographers)

My first newborn of 2010 could not have been more perfect. She slept, she hardly fussed and she is as cute as a button, with tiny features that are doll like and perfect. This little girl made my day and since her parents bought the First Year Club plan, I’ll be seeing this little one grow.

One Real Cutie Pie (Winnipeg Child Photographer)

This weekend I had the pleasure of photographing a real cutie pie who had just turned 5.  I’ve been so lucky lately in photographing kids who want their picture taken! N was just like that. She wanted to give me her best cheesy grin, but after having some fun with her I got some great shots. Here are a few of them:
