Clothing Choices (Winnipeg Photographer: Families, Children, Newborn)

This post from June remains my number one viewed post and I decided to repost it.

This is my 100th post. Hard to believe!! Time does fly by, but the good thing is that we finally have some nice weather.

I have had a lot of inquiries on getting fall family pictures taken. Please don’t delay in booking  a shoot as I will be away from Oct. 5th till the 12th. I’m going to visit my favorite little person, my grandson in Calgary. I will also be spending some time in Canmore where I am hoping to take pictures of the mountains and some fall scenes.

Here is the clothing choices post:

People often ask me what they should wear for a shoot, so today I am writing about clothing choice, as well as  including some examples of family pictures with  great clothing combinations.

The clothing that people are wearing is not the first thing that you should notice in a family picture. The relationship between the people in the picture and their expressions should be what your eyes focus on.  If everyone is wearing clothing that has stripes, patterns, or some kind of design it takes away from the most important part of the image, which is the faces of the people in the portrait. It is best if everyone wear the same colour or shades of the same colour. That way the focus is on the faces of the people, as well as making the family look like a cohesive whole. Most people make sure that what they wear on a particular day matches. Take that a step further and make sure that the people that will be in a portrait also match each other. It really does make a difference. Here are some examples:

Grants-24

This family is wearing brown on top and demin. I think it looks great and it also matches the fall leaves! I think the focus is on the interactions between the children and the mom and dad. I love the expression on the dog as well!

I like the white and demin that this family is wearing. The white really make them pop out against the fall leaves. And even though you don’t see their faces, you notice the little girl and wonder what she is saying. The smallest boy is so adorable in it as well. This picture wouldn’t work if the family were wearing different colour, or stripes etc.

Wearing black is an excellent clothing choice when you have a black background. Your eyes go to the interaction and the faces. I love this portrait!

White tops with a white background is also a great choice. Doesn’t this family look great? I love how the baby is holding onto dad’s cheek!

tracy and chris-29

I love this portrait! I think it looks like a poster for a movie. This couple was so much fun to work with. I also photographed their wedding which was awesome. I like the black tops with the jeans.  The colour you pick for your top should be in the brown, black, navy, white or beige range for a portrait that will be a keepsake for years to come. Pant colour can be demin, beige, black or brown.

And Baby Makes Four (Winnipeg Newborn and Family Photographer)

Have I ever been lucky with the sweet little girl babies  lately. On  Tuesday I had the pleasure of photographing this adorable 2 week old baby. Even though D did not want to sleep in the whole 2.5 hours that she was here,  she never cried either and she made the most amazing eye contact for a newborn! I saw her brother again who I had photographed 4 times in the past.  He’s going to be a charmer for all the girls with his beautiful big eyes and long eyelashes.

Thank you so much to A and A for bringing their kids here.  I will be seeing more of D, as she is now in my Baby’s First Year Club.

Bastille Day in Paris (Winnipeg Photographer)

One of the highlights of my trip to Europe was Bastille Day in Paris. The fireworks were amazing but it was more the experience of the whole day. Military vehicles drove down the streets during the day and French flags were everywhere. It seemed like a great idea to see the fireworks at the Eiffel Tower and get some shots of this famous landmark all ablaze. I don’t know if my cousin and her family have forgiven me yet for suggesting this outing. I hope that in hindsite they can see the value of having been in a crowd of over a million people and having no way of getting back to our hotel except by using our own two feet.

We got to the Eiffel Tower site in plenty of time, which was maybe our first mistake because it only meant that we had to wait longer and breathe the smoke filled air for longer. There was no breeze at all, the temperature was over 30 C (as it was for most of our trip), and there were wall to wall people. And half of them were smoking. Smoking all around us. The French smoke a lot!! While people were waiting, they played cards, had picnics, drank, baby’s cried, children screamed and ran around and not only that. We were entertained a French singer who drove the crowd wild with excitement.  Unfortunately for us, he seemed to be able to croon out the songs with no break at all. Endless love songs in French. The speakers were enormous so he was loud. And there was  a big jumbo screen to watch him gyrate his hips if you were interested.  And people took pictures with all their point and shoots. I found it interesting to take pictures of the people taking pictures and capturing what it was they saw on their camera screen. The fireworks were amazing. There is no doubt about that as you will see in the video.

We left halfway through the fireworks because we were concerned about how all of these people would get home. We didn’t need to have bothered. There was only one way to get home and that was walking. People were crowded into subway stations like sardines. And I would rather walk for 2 hours than be pushed and shoved around in a crowd. So we walked. And we walked. We walked for 2 hours often not knowing if we were going the right way. There was no chance to getting a cab either. The streets were full of people walking in masse. Every once in a while a car would come through the crowd with the driver blasting his horn and not caring if he hit someone. It was every man for himself.

We got back to our hotel at 1 a.m. In the end, it was a memorable experience and I did get some great shots of the fireworks. But I would not do it again. Not unless I was assured of nobody smoking around me and safe passage out of the crowd. And really what are the chances of that happening?

Watch the video and enjoy!

If you need to contact me while I’m away you can reach me at chrisineurope09@live.com. I made up the new email address because Shaw is not always available in foreign countries.  I am super excited!!

Holiday Plans (Winnipeg Photographer)

In just over 2 weeks I will off on a trip to Europe. Between now and then, I have 2 newborns (one is taking her slow time about being born) to shoot and 2 weddings. I will take other bookings but not after July 8th, so if you are thinking of booking a shoot, don’t hesitate to give me a call. I will be taking bookings again after the 1st of August. While I’m away, I will be checking email but obviously won’t be checking phone messages. My husband will be here but he won’t be taking any bookings. So send me an email if you have a request or any questions. I will get back to you depending on availability of connections. Oh yes, my laptop is making the trip with me. I am super excited.

Baby’s First Year (Winnipeg Child and Family Photographer)

A baby changes more in the first year of their life than they ever will again. Having a visual record of that year is something that you will always treasure. I love photographing newborns and babies, which is why I am offering a special for the first year. Join my Baby’s First Year Club and you will get 4 photo sessions and an 8.5×11 hard cover photo book, all for the price of $300. Plus I will remind you when it is time for your next session. That would be a newborn session, followed by 4 months, 8 months and a one year session. You need to pay the $300 at the time of the first session in order to get the free photo book. If you pay as you go, I will still reduce the price of the one year session, but you will not get the free photo book.

Refer a Friend (Winnipeg Child and Family Photographer)

refer a friend with kids 6 09sm2

I am launching a new program that I’m calling Refer a Friend. It works this way. If you refer somebody for a shoot; you can get a $50 print credit. And the best part is that your friend will also get a $50 print credit. Please note that you cannot use the credit to cover part of the cost of a shoot and you cannot redeem your credit until your friend has come for their shoot. I think it’s a win-win-win proposition. You and your friend win by getting free prints and I win by getting new clients. I’m excited by the possibilites.

It would be a great understatement to say that the weather this weekend was bad. And I can see people’s desperation growing as the days of rain and cool weather continue. I am including myself in that. I rescheduled some people who had booked a Family Pictures in the Park  Session. If anyone else is interested please let me know. I can do a few next weekend. After that I have 3 weddings in a row and then I am off to Paris, France. I can hardly believe it!!

The weather warmed up enough on Sunday to do a wonderful family of two boys, aged 8 and 10 and their little 4 year old sister. The kids were very shy and kind of scared at first but I think they were very comfortable in a short time. I’m not sure what kids expect when they think of getting their pictures taken. It’s kind of surprising at how young an age they become camera shy. Too many people asking them to smile and say “cheese”, while holding a camera up to their faces. I had fun chasing these kids down the trail in the park. I think you’ll agree that these kids are having fun.

Piano Recital (Winnipeg Event Photographer)

Last night I had the pleasure of going to my first ever recital of any kind. I have been to many swim meets and to a ton of hockey games but our sons never had recitals so this was a first. I do not play the piano either, so to hear these students playing was amazing. It is my goal to take piano lessons at some point, so this helped me decide that it would be soon. These kids were not only cute but they could play. Many of them were first year students and they did really well. Many thanks to a wonderful piano teacher, Alvina Koshy for the work she has done with these students. If you know someone who is interested in lessons give Alvina a call at 663-2420.

Here are some of my favorites:

Family pictures in the park were suppposed to be today but it was too cold. June pictures should look like summer and not fall or spring so I will try again another weekend, hopefully before the mosquitoes come to torment us! I do have some bookings tomorrow, so am hoping for a warm wind to come and give us some heat. With a high of 16, it may just feel like summer. Give me a call at 669-0498 if you are interested. I do have some space available for Sunday.

Till next time,

Play Date in the Park (Winnipeg Family Photographer)

I decided that I would include Sunday  for play date sessions in Bunn’s Creek Park next weekend.  I cleared my Sunday schedule and am ready to take bookings.

Don’t wait to book a photo session this weekend. Spots are filling quickly!! I still have openings for Friday and Saturday, but if Sunday works better for you, just send me an email at chrismcwilliams@shaw.ca or call me at 204-669-0498. I am still in Calgary right now, but have been checking my messages daily.

By the way, and I don’t even want to think about bad weather, but if it should rain this weekend, I will rebook for another weekend that suits people. But it will not rain. Right??

Here are some pictures from a Play Date session in the park last fall that was really fun. I loved working with these people!!

Mini Sessions in the Park (Winnipeg Child and Family Photographer)

Join me for family pictures at the park. Sesssions are 20 minutes and include one 8×10 and 2 5x7s for the reduced price of $50.

On Friday, June 5th and Saturday, June 6th I will be taking family pictures in Bunn’s Creek Park. It’s the perfect time of the year to get family r pictures taken. The weather should be good and if we’re really lucky, they won’t be any mosquitoes. The trees will have leaves by then and what could be a better spot for family pictures. I love the trails, the trees, the stumps and the playground equipment that are all available to use as props. I think it the perfect spot for photography sessions.   I’m open to taking pictures at any time on these days, but you need to contact me to book a time. First come, first serve. I can only do a certain number of shoots in a day before my creative energies are depleted, so don’t delay booking a time.

Bunn’s Creek Park is located on McIvor Ave. in North Kildonan and it is the place where I have walked or run for the past 25 years. I love the park and have done a number of shoots in the park in past years. It is perfect for the play date type of portraits that I love to do. I chased the two children in the poster down some trails in order to get that image of them. The swings and play structure also lend themselves very well to capturing a natural and fun expression.

I am very excited about the possibilities of pictures in the park.

Call me at 669-0498 or email me at chrismcwilliams@shaw.ca to book your tim
