Mother’s Day Gift Idea! (Winnipeg Family Photographers)

What do you think most mothers would most value on Mother’s Day?

Being a mother myself, I know what I think the answer to this question is. Mothers love to spend time with their children and appreciate having a visual memory of that time in the form of a professional portrait. Not something snapped with an iPhone and lost somewhere in cyberspace in a few years, but a portrait that can be displayed on the wall or on a desk.  You can make that happen for your mother.

There are 2 ways you can do this. You can purchase a gift certificate for your mom and make an appointment for a photography session at a later date, or you can plan the session in the next couple of weeks and present to your mother on Mother’s Day. I can assure you that your mom would be delighted.

For a limited time I have a Mother’s Day Special.

Here are 2 of the ads from my special. I am extending this special until Mother’s Day, so don’t delay! (Limited weekend times available.)

This wonderful lady died this year but I was fortunate enough to be able to photograph her family of daughters at her 90th Birthday Party. I know that this image will be treasured for years to come. And what a thrill for the mom to have family come from East and West to be at the party.

If you were prefer, I can print up a gift certificate and customize it for you. I can even find a frame for it if you like.

The session is still $59 with 1 8×10 or 2 5×7 prints included, as in the above offer.

Don’t delay. Mother’s Day is fast approaching.

Baby’s First Year! (Winnipeg Baby Photographers)

One of my most popular plans is The Baby’s First Year Package. For this package you get 4 photography sessions in your baby’s first year plus a hard cover 8×11 photo book. The price for this package is $350, but for the next 4 weeks, I am offering it to clients for $300. The value of this package is:

  • $125 for the first newborn session
  • $80×3=$240 for the next 3 sessions
  • $400 for the photo book

That would equal a total of $665, offering a savings of $365!!

The first year of your child’s life is one of growth and change. In face, your child will again change as much as in that year. But you might say, “I take a lot of pictures of my baby with my phone. I take pictures every day.”

The question I would then ask you is,” What do you do with those pictures?” Do you ever compile and print them? Do you make a book of them? Where will they end up? Will they forever stay on your phone or computer? Isn’t it nicer to sit down and look at a book than look at a computer?

The following are the pages from a Baby’s First Year Book that I just created. This book will be a treasure that this family will have to look back on for years to come. What a lovely tribute to this child!

These are screen captures of the book, so are not indicative of the quality of the book. You will notice that we also did a maternity session for this book and I can do the same for you.

Give me a call if you are interested in this package or if you know someone who might be.

Maternity Sessions!

Thank you to everyone who forwarded my maternity special to pregnant ladies that they knew. I photographed 6 beautiful mamas; six amazing women who were a ton of fun to work with. Some came with an older child, one came with her husband and 2 came with their dogs. I accomplished my goal of adding to my portfolio, trying some new ideas  and using the maternity gowns that I had purchased.
Here are a few of my maternity images:

Mother’s Day Special

___________________________________________________
I know that a lot of moms take pictures of their children, but often they are not in the pictures. I took a lot of pictures of my children when they were little, but I don’t have many that I’m in.

If you are a mother, this is the perfect offer for you to take advantage of.  Use it to book a session for yourself and your children. Or just for yourself.

This is a limited time special and is only available for the week starting on Saturday, April 14th. We will do the sessions in my studio or at an outdoor location.

This special can also be purchased as a gift for your mother and used at a later date. I can customize a gift certificate for you. Just send me the details and I can get that ready for you.

Please pass this special on to anyone that you think might be interested. You can email me at chrismcwilliamsphotography@gmail.com, or you can call or text me at 204-962.3424.

Hope to hear from you!

Raising a Reader

As many of you know, I was a teacher for many years. I taught grades 1 to 4 for over 30 years. One of the joys of teaching children in the early years is watching them grow as readers. Any grade 1 teacher can tell you how magical it is when a child starts to read.

There are many things that a parent can do to ensure that their child becomes a reader.

  • The single most important thing you can do is read to your child from the time they are very small. Make it an enjoyable experience and your child will associate reading with pleasure.
  • Have books around  house. Make sure you have books in a variety of genres; including fiction and non fiction.
  • Be a reader yourself. Children model behaviour; so make sure that they see you relaxing with a book.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s reading. I would be happy to help you.

Products at ChrisMcWilliamsPhotography! (Winnipeg Photography Studios)

I’ve spent the last couple of months developing and purchasing some beautiful products for my photography studio.  I want to provide my clients with heirloom artwork; products that they can’t get anywhere else.

Digital files will and do disappear, whether on a failed hard drive, lost in a drawer or on a damaged DVD.  It happens all the time. Clients often contact me to see if they can get a copy of an image that we took a few years ago. The good thing is that my archives go back a number of years and I probably will have the image stored online. But how many people have that?

Prints, whether as wall art or in an album will always be accessible and professional products will last 100 years.

Having said that, here are a few of my new products:

I love the beautiful little girl in the image below and had one of the images of her printed and plaque mounted. It looks amazing!

This image has  been accepted by the Professional Photographers of Canada (Mb).

I had such a great time with this group of children. I had their image mounted on canvas. It is stunning!

The next few images are of a folio box. A folio box is a box that you keep your prints in and display either on a coffee table or on a shelf with albums and books. I know a lot of people put new prints in front of old ones in the same frame. This is a great alternative because you can see easily all the prints.

Folio boxes come in all sizes, colours and materials. The one shown is black velvet and holds 8×10 matted prints.

This is how an opened box looks.

Here is a close up of a matted print.

Albums make cherished keepsakes. They are a great way to organize and remember events in your life. I have 2 new albums. The first one is a 5×7, has a brown leather cover and hard, lay flat pages.

This album is 10×10 inches and has a black suede cover. It also has thick pages that lay flat.

Accordion books make a great gift idea and are also a handy way to carry your favorite images with you.

Contact me if you are interested in booking a session or if you had a session a while ago and would like to purchase one of these products.

Holiday Photography Sessions! (Winnipeg Family Photographers)

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Costco has had their Christmas decorations up for about a month and other retailers put their stuff out the day after Halloween. Yesterday, while walking my dog in the dark, I noticed a decorated Christmas tree up in a neighbour’s window.

Yes, Christmas will be here before we know it. And snow isn’t long in coming either. Boohoo on snow!

That means it’s time to get your holiday/Christmas photo session booked. And just in time for Christmas I am running a special.

This special is for sessions in the studio or at The Legislative Bldg for bigger groups.

Don’t delay. We have some new backdrops and look forward to hearing from you!

Hot Summer Deals and Photo Tips! (Winnipeg Photography Newsletter)

Why I am obsessed with my iPhone and you could be too!

I confess that I am addicted to my iPhone.  I like to have it with me at all times. Leaving it at home (which I have done on occasion),  makes me feel as though I am missing a body part! I sleep with it, eat with it and use it all day long!
It really amazes me that this little device is so powerful and so useful. This small phone/camera/GPS, etc. does just about everything but paint your house and cook your meals (although you can use it to find a painter or a cook!). I play Scrabble on my iPhone, (having logged in well over 1000 games}. I use the GPS and am always using it to find information. (Do you know how flea markets got their names? Use your Smart phone to find out)
I take a lot of photos on my iPhone and use some very cool apps to develop them.
This photo was shot and developed on my iPhone. You can see the actual print at the Red River Exhibition Photo Salon! http://www.redriverex.com/competitions/photo-contest/

I

I combined these 2 images to create the one above.

Amazing isn’t it?
All on my iPhone!
The world at my fingertips. And if fits in the palm on my hand!
This is one addiction that I love!

Here are some photo tips to improve your iPhone photography:

  • Use a camera app called Camera+ instead of the camera that comes with your iPhone. With Camera+, it won’t take the picture until you hold the camera still.
  • My favorite apps for developing photos are Snapseed, DynamicLight and DistressedFX. Play with your photos. It’s the only way your photography will improve.
  • Take an iPhone photography course given by Alexandra Morrison. https://plus.google.com/+alexandramorrison/posts/HEW35QhuSU4. I don’t know when she’s doing another course, but I’ve learned a lot from her.

Questions to ask your family photographer

There are many options out there for choosing a family photographer. On Groupon alone, you can pick from  9 different businesses. The prices for Groupon photographers vary from $29 to $69 and the deals include receiving a few prints, to receiving a DVD of up to 20 high resolution digital images. I like a deal as much as the next person, but I wonder about businesses can offer a deal that is costing them money. If you are spending the time to get your family together to get professionals photos taken, don’t you want a great product?

Here are some suggestions for what to ask and what to look for when considering hiring a photographer:

  • Take a look at the image that they are using to advertise their deal. (People should not have green faces and their faces should not be hidden in shadow ) Look at their website and see if you like what they have to offer.
  • Ask how long they have been in business. (I’ve been in business for 8 years.)
  • What kind of photography do they specialize in? Do they have experience in that area? For example, if they are photographing children, have they had experience with them? (I was an early years teacher for over 30 years.)
  • Is there a policy for rescheduling in case of inclement weather? (I will reschedule an appointment with up to an hour’s notice if the weather is bad.)
  • Are digital images available for purchase? (I offer high resolution digital images).
  • Do you know anyone else who has used this person? Word of mouth is huge in finding a great photographer.)

I know it’s a lot of work to get your family ready for a photo session. You don’t want it to be a waste of your time.
Let me know if you are interested in purchasing my Groupon. I will do the session for the Groupon price of $55.

Please note that Groupons cannot be used for newborn sessions as those sessions take up to 4 hours to photograph.

Landscape Photography Tips: Victoria Beach!

We  have the most beautiful lakes and beaches in Manitoba and I was lucky to have spent a recent weekend at Victoria Beach. I had been there before but never for more than an afternoon. I love the rocks and the beaches but was especially struck by the gnarly trees in one spot and the high cliffs with faraway views. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Tips for taking better landscape photos:

  • Watch the light. If you can, take your pictures either right after sunrise, or before sunset.
  • Look at other photographer’s work online.
  • Learn the rules of composition; like rule of thirds  http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/2012/06/12/rule-of-thirds-use-it-and-break-it-with-confidence/and framing http://www.photographyblogger.net/framing/
  • Most importantly, take a photography course or join a community of photographers. There are a lot of them in Winnipeg but I would suggest the manitobacameraclub.ca, as that’s the one that I belong to and I’ve learned a lot from them!
  • Then practice, practice, practice. Take a ton of photographs
  • Have fun doing it!

But is it summer?

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost the end of June; that the longest day of the year is here.  Our summer days have been few and far between. I don’t think I’ve ever had to reschedule as many sessions as I have in the last month. And it just seems to be continuing that way.
I love shooting outside. I love natural backdrops but sometimes the weather does not cooperate. I will reschedule at an hour’s notice if need be. Sometimes rescheduling is not an option. I know what that’s like. You’ve finally got the whole family to agree to a day and time and you got them all to wear matching colours and then it starts to rain. Rescheduling would be difficult.
There are some options for indoor photos. We can use my studio but the space is limited to about 6 people. I often use the Legislative building. It’s free and doesn’t need to be booked ahead of time. There are many spots that make great backdrops for family photos. And then, if it is possible to go outside, the grounds are lovely! I have also done a few sessions inside at the Forks, both in the Inn at the Forks and inside the Forks Market. It’s a great alternative if it isn’t a busy weekend.

We can make it work. It isn’t the same as being outside, but we can make some beautiful photographs!

This was taken inside at The Ledge.

Taken inside The Inn at the Forks.

Summer Deal

My next website coupon deal is for 50% off prints, including the shipping fee. The coupon code is “summerdeal.” It is valid until July 7th, so don’t delay using it. Please note that this offer is good for prints bought from my website only.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I book about a month in advance, so let me know if you are interested in updating your family photo.

Remember “summerdeal.”  Use it now.

And Finally

I found this poem some time ago. I’ve never heard of Erin Hanson, the poet, but his words ring true. You can tell a lot about a person by the photos they have displayed. What photos are displayed at your house? Are they recent? Is it time to update them?

Yours in photography,
Christina
