Studio Upgrade

I am very happy to announce that my studio upgrade is complete!

In the image below you can see my new floor with a brick backdrop. Along the right side are 2 other backdrops set up for Christmas sessions. The new floor makes it much easier to move equipment around and to change floor drops, as well as looking great in pictures!

Remember the treadmill I used to hang blankets on? I got rid of it and now have the blankets hanging on 2 layers of rods. This helps me to see what I have and to access the blankets more easily.

My newborn wraps are also hung on a rod, making them easier to see and access. I’m still working on an easy fix for displaying headbands. Let me know if you have an idea/solution for showing them.

In the image below is my updated client room. On the ledge at the back is my projector which I use when doing “In Person Sales”. Images are projected onto the opposite white wall allowing clients to view images in a large display.

I’ve done  “In Person Sales” for over a month now and really love the process. My biggest thrill is hearing my client’s OOHs and AHHs when they first see their images. I like being available to answer client questions, as well as, helping them make choices for their photography products.

Come and have a look and we can talk about your next photography session!  Coffee and tea are available and I will even supply some treats!

More on Printing

I recently found a really great article on the importance of printing from a childhood perspective. You can find it here:

https://www.michellemckayphotographer.com/blog/2017/7/8/the-importance-of-printing-photographs-childhood-identity-and-a-history-made-in-pictures

The author writes about prints of her young daughter that she has displayed in her house and how those prints help give her daughter a sense of personal identity and  belonging.

I love her words:

These days of now will be gone, but through photographs they can be remembered and cherished. We can remain tied to our pasts, to our memories.

We can have and hold all these versions of our life and our selves still; they can exist all at once on the walls and in the hallways of our homes.

Long after these days and sleepless nights have ended, let there exist a record around us – a story of love, belonging, connection.

A rich and glorious tapestry.

A history, told in pictures.

Wise words I think.

FREE Digital image!

As a promotion for the month of January, I am offering you a full resolution digital image at no charge after you spend $400 on products. This can be any image that is in your gallery.

The Paper is Always Free

I recently wrote a blog post entitled “The Paper is Always Free.” You can read it here:

https://cmphotographyblog.com/2017/11/28/the-paper-is-always-free-winnipeg-photography-studios/

This article talks about the costs of running a photography business. It is important that consumers understand that you are not paying for paper when you order a print. You are paying for all the expenses and artistry that go into producing that print. The list of photography expenses is endless, but some of the items are listed below.

The same costs go into producing a digital image as making a print; therefore a digital image does not cost less than a print.

Read the article for more information.

And Finally!

I wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season and a Healthy New Year.

Also hanging is The Tree of Divination which won Best Contemporary Image with The Manitoba Camera Club, as well as, Lily, The Face in the Tatters and Serenity.

Cre8tery is in the Exchange District on the  2nd floor at 125 Adelaide Street.

It is open:Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, 12-6pm

Saturday 12-5pm

Cre8tery will be open late for First Friday on Sept. 8th.

Drop in if you have a chance. My pictures will be hanging until the end of Thanksgiving weekend.

You can view these images and a few more on this page of my website: http://www.chrismcwilliamsphotography.com/Fine-Art-Photography/. Having said that, viewing them online is no substitute for seeing them printed and mounted!
Hope you can make it.

Lights, Camera, Editing, Portraits!

This is a repeat of an article in my last newsletter. I am including it for my new clients and am also adding some information to it.

It is very important to me that you love the images from your session. I will do my utmost from the beginning of our correspondence to you’re receiving your order to make sure that you are happy with the experience and the result. To that end, I want to explain the steps in the whole process.

  1. You come for your portrait session.
  2. I put a few of your images on my blog.
  3. I do an initial editing of your images. This is often called a “soft editing”. It involves colour correction, some clean up of the background, lightening if needed and cropping. At this point, your images will not be completely edited, except for the ones on my blog.
  4. You receive a password protected gallery to review your proofs.
  5. You send your order to me by email.
  6. I do a full editing of the images that you ordered. This involves a full background clean up, removing blemishes, smoothing skin, brightening eyes, head swaps if needed, and further corrections for colour and brightness. You can preview these images after I have worked on them if you like. Once you are happy with them:
  7. You receive an invoice from me, make payment and pick up your order or have it mailed to you.

I accept payment by cash, cheque, interac e-transfer, credit cards and Paypal.

This is the most time efficient way for me to operate. Most galleries have between 20 and 50 images in them. It only takes  me a few minutes to do the “soft edit”, whereas the final edit might take 20 minutes. The soft edit includes correcting lighting and colour, as well as cropping and some skin corrections. The final edit involves a full clean up of the backdrop and more skin corrections.

You can see the progression in the images below. The first image is straight out of the camera. In the first soft edit, I lightened it, cropped it and did some colour corrections. In the final completely edited image, I straightened the floor, make the wrap more symmetrical, took some red out the babies skin, removed some of the shadow around the babies head on the left and burned the edges of the floor. The first edit didn’t take long but the final one took me about 20 minutes.

Aren’t these twins cute! They were super sleepy babies as well. I loved every minute of this session!

And Finally

Isn’t this the truth? What other record will we have that we lived? Only printed images will survive the test of time and be there for future generations to see.

Lights, Camera…………………Prints?? (Winnipeg Photography Newsletter)

Lights, Camera, Prints

It’s ironic that we take more photos than ever before but make very few prints. Although It is wonderful that we document our lives this way and have images on our phones and computers, we need to be mindful of  what could happen to those images in the future.

Getting prints made is a guarantee that our images will last and is a good idea for a number of reasons:

  • Hard drive crashes: It is only a matter of time before your hard drive crashes.  It’s not a question of “will it crash?” but “when will it crash?’ If your precious memories of a trip to Disney-world or your child’s first birthday are stored on  your computer, it is only a matter of time before those images will be lost.
  • Technology changes; 100 years from now we might not be able to use DVDs. Remember VHS and floppy disks? Having your images backed up on DVDs is no guarantee that they will be safe.
  • Sharing Memories: There is something special in sharing a print with a friend or relative, with having prints on display and with passing them down to the next generation. Giving someone a DVD of images does not have the same sentimental value as giving them a photograph.

There are some good options for printing that make the whole task painless:

  1. Photo books: Photo books are easy to put together and relatively inexpensive. I recently saw a “little black book” done at Black’s Photography and it looked great! Other places for photo books are: Costco, My Publisher, Blurb and Shutterfly.
  2. Online Print Ordering: I order all of my prints online. I use Don’s Photo Pro Lab for professional prints and Costco for others. In one of my photography classes, we had prints made at 17 different labs in the city. There was a wide range in quality, with the Pro labs doing the best jobs and drug store kiosks and Walmart  the worst.  Costco does a reasonably good job. Don’s Photo, Lab Works and Photo Central have great products and guarantee the results. With prints, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

I can help you produce a photo book. Send me an email (chrismcwilliamsphotography@gmail.com) or phone me (204-962-3424) and we can discuss what your needs are. I’ll be happy to give you a quote for your photo book.

Print Coupon

I am offering a print coupon for prints ordered from my website only. The coupon code is “printdiscount.” and is valid from April 12th till the 30th. The coupon gives you 50% off prints and for the first time ever, it is including the shipping!

Don’t delay using this coupon. Prices will go back to normal in May!

Snap and Burn Photographers

There are a lot of photographers out there doing what is called “snap and burn” photography. I wrote a blog post some time ago on this topic: https://chrismcwilliamsphotography.wordpress.com/2012/10/17/snap-and-burn-photography-winnipeg-portrait-photographers/.

Snap and burn photography became popular after the advent of the digital camera. Everyone became a photographer and some now offer their services for one low price, which includes the session fee and the images on a DVD.

So why choose ChrisMcWilliamsPhotography when there are cheaper alternatives out there?

  • I know kids. I’ve spent most of my adult life teaching them or photographing them and I know how to communicate with them.
  • I know photography. I’ve taken a lot of classes and have kept up with the latest technology and techniques.
  • I make the experience easy. Sessions are fun and galleries are online for you to view in the comfort of your home. You have 2 weeks to place your order. No pressured ordering meeting. No minimum order.
  • I guarantee my product. It you are not happy with your session, we will do it again. No questions asked.

Here’s an example of the difference between an original image that would might get from a “snap and burn” photographer and a fully edited image.

Is it worth the difference? I think it is.

Groupon

Spring is finally here and I know a lot of you will want to update your family photos. I want to remind you that I will honour the Groupon price of $55 per session for former Groupon clients or to anyone who subscribes to this newsletter. I book about a month ahead of time, so let me know if you are interested in booking a session in May. (Please note that this price is only good for groups of 6 or less).

Almost Spring?

The air is finally warmer and Sunday was a beautiful day in Winnipeg. I went out to take some pictures at The Forks and in The Exchange district. It was wonderful to see so many people out enjoying a beautiful Sunday.

Here are a couple of those pictures:

I took some iPhone photos on Saturday to show how much snow we have. . This is one of them taken along the sidewalk on Gateway. Someone told me it looked like there was a tunnel. Not far off. Where is all this snow going??

Client Feedback

I love getting feedback and would like to share some recent feedback. Thank you to these people for their kind words.

Chris was very patient while getting some great shots of my two-month-old twins, which wasn’t easy! The photos she posted to her blog the same day were awesome. She was lovely to work with and I would highly recommend her.

Great experience, wonderful person and takes beautiful pictures!

So much fun and the pictures were amazing

We had a recommendation from friends to try her. We did with the groupon and were very happy with the results! We would ask her again!

Excellent photographer. Very professional. Prompt with providing gallery for photo viewing. Reasonable rates.

Thanks Chris!! I just love the pictures!!!!

Awesome! Thanks 🙂 we had fun! Can’t wait to see the rest!

Groupon News

As many of you know, I am featured as a Groupon photographer. Did you also know that if you have bought a Groupon in the past, I will do your next session for the Groupon price.  I do this because if you buy the session from Groupon, they keep 45% of the money that you pay.

Let me know if you are interested in booking a session once the snow is gone. I prefer to book 4 to 6 weeks ahead, so there is no hurry if you want to wait for spring. Hopefully, by the beginning of May, we’ll have some green grass and some leaves on the trees.

Of course, if you want to book me for a special event, I will take your booking earlier than 6 weeks before your event.

This photograph is the one the I am using for my Groupon feature right now. I’m happy to say that it won 2nd place in the Jan. Open competition for the Manitoba Camera Club. It’s one of my favourites and just goes to show you that a big smile doesn’t always result in the best photograph. I love the little boy’s expression. Isn’t this a precious memory photo?

Google+

Did you know that Google+ now has the third-largest number of active users of any social network, meaning it’s technically now more-used than Twitter!

Have a look at this article for more information:

http://heidicohen.com/global-social-media-trends/

As this graph shows Google+ is gaining momentum.

I’ve been working on my Goggle+ page and would like to ask my clients and friends to follow me. You can access my page here:

https://plus.google.com/u/0/+ChristinaMcWilliamswpg/posts

Thank you for your support!

Spring Special

With this special, if you refer a friend to me, you will both get a $59 print credit! You can also use the $59 credit toward buying a DVD of all your images. That price is usually $350, but for the rest of March and all of April, I will discount it by $59 if you refer a friend to me.

Don’t delay booking. If you want to book your session after the end of April, you can still take advantage of this offer by paying for the special now and we can do the session once the snow is gone.

And Finally

Something that we can all relate to!

Winter is Here!

Whining about winter!

I try to be a positive person but winter is not my season. I don’t like the dark, the cold, the isolation, the icy roads, the blustery winds and a host of other stuff. I walk outside in the winter and I don’t mind that. I dress for it. But I really hate driving in the winter and I really hate how early it gets dark. But anyone who wants to live  in Winnipeg has to put up with winter and so I do. I like living here and I plan to move. I’m thinking of going somewhere hot but not sure where.  Let’s see: Hawaii, Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica, ………………………………….

How about the rest of you? How do you cope with winter? I could use a pep talk on why I should like winter.

This is Kilcona Park. Yes, hoar-frost is beautiful and is one good reason to like winter.

I haven’t done a newsletter for a long time because I’ve been so busy shooting and editing and working on orders. It’s all good. Even in the winter! But I am taking a break from all the other things that I need to do to write to you about what is new here at ChrisMcWilliamsPhotography.

New Package

I like to try out new price categories and this one has been very popular lately.

10 digital images plus 5×7 prints of the images for $185

One of the reasons that I introduced this category is because of my belief that images should be printed and displayed. It’s great to have digital copies of your files but I feel it’s also important to display prints of your favourite images in your home and office and  I often wonder how many clients who buy digital files will have prints made.

The other reason is because, if I include the print, I know how it will look and can assured of its quality. I have my prints done at Don’s Photo on Main and I recommend them to clients. I urge you to avoid Walmart or drug store kiosks for printing. The quality is not good and will not reflect the work that I put into your images. I want you to have the best quality for a reasonable price.

Christmas cards

I’ve had some people ask if I design Christmas cards and the answer is that yes, I do. I can do a custom design for you or you can make up your own card on my website. Yes, you can design your card right on my website, using your images and make any changes to it that you would like. Just start by clicking on the “add to my cart” button on any image and follow the links.

And just in time for Christmas, I am offering a coupon code for 20% off all cards. This offer is good until Dec. 7th, so don’t delay! You’ll need to hurry on this offer as my website provider always states that shipping takes 3 weeks. I’ve had orders come in a week or 10 days but I guess they say 3 weeks to be on the safe side.

The code is “xmascardspecial.” Just type in the code when you place your order and you will save 20%!

This is a screen shot of one card that I made up in 5 minutes!

Groupon

Thank you to all the people who bought my latest Groupon. Don’t forget that this one expires in 6 months and not a year. And please remember that if you bought a Groupon before and are interested in another session, that I will do your session for the Groupon price. Why give Groupon 45% of the money?

So for $55, I will do your session and include prints of one image!

Your Galleries

A huge “thank you”  to all my clients who have placed an order in a timely fashion.

I like to keep galleries listed for a 2 week period but I am open to keeping your gallery listed a little longer. I understand that sometimes your lives are more hectic than other times and you need more time. Having said that, I won’t keep your gallery listed indefinitely and will move it to the archives if I don’t hear from you. However, should you decide to place an order at a later date, just send me an email and I can relist it. But have no fear, I never delete your images. They are safely stored in the Smugmug Vault!

WE DAY

It was my pleasure to once be a WE DAY photographer. This year I followed Craig Kielburger, one of the founders around. I was at the gala event the evening before the main event and then followed him around the entire day of We Day. I thought that Craig was a quiet, possibly even introverted man, who is not at all like his stage persona. He was very considerate of everyone that he came in contact with and seemed to genuinely care about others. It was an honor to spend time with him.

Here are a few highlights of the 2 days, starting with me on stage!

And Finally

That’s it for today!

Yours in Photography,
Christina
